October Roundtable: Intentional Horror Games
You know that bit at the end of The Muppet Christmas Carol where Gonzo (as Charles Dickens) and Rizzo (as Rizzo) excuse themselves because the movie has gotten too scary? That’s me with this roundtable.
This month, we’re talking about intentionality in horror games. But Melissa, I hear you say, surely all horror games are intentional about the horror they contain? Not necessarily! Games, like any other horror media, can be packed full of bad-faith jump scares and scares for scares sake. We’re not talking about that. We’re talking about the oopy-goopy, freaky-deaky stuff that’s made to creep you out down to your bones, not just by making a loud sound at an opportune time, but by rattling you to your core.
