Review: Fairyland Confidential is Dark, Dangerous Fun

I have a lot of ambition when it comes to tabletop RPGs. I want to play them all but rarely have the time, and time is even more scarce when it comes to getting a group together. But single-player RPGs are intimidating—can I have fun by myself? Am I throwing money at something I’ll never actually make time for, or is this a worthwhile hobby to get into? (more…)

5 Low-Prep, GMless Games to Play from Far Away

Welcome to the quarantimes. All across the land, folks are starting remote D&D games in an effort to find something to do with their distant friends, and you’re starting to think a tabletop RPG sounds like fun, too. But wait! You don’t have a friend you can easily designate as DM (or GM, as the case may be), and you certainly don’t want to put in that kind of planning time.

Well, good news: You don’t always need a GM to play TTRPGs. I love telling stories with my friends, but I’ve never in my life been able to commit to GMing… so I’ve built up a stable of GM-less games that I can pull out and play with zero prep. (more…)

Greenlight This, You Cowards: Roll to Fall in Love with Dames and Dragons

Fans of tabletop roleplaying games live in an exciting time. The TTRPG world is blossoming, and the popularity of shows like Critical Role and The Adventure Zone (TAZ) are encouraging a boom in tabletop media outside of traditional Twitch streams and podcasts. Get In the Robot!: An Interview With Lancer’s Massif Press

Featuring a mixture of military science fiction and fantasy, Lancer is a mech tabletop roleplaying game that takes place in a vast galaxy and is as much about the robots as it is about the people who pilot them. Whether seeking to advance private interests or go rogue, players can work with or against each other as they fly their way through the unfathomable reaches of the stars.

Massif Press, Lancer’s publisher, is made up of Tom Parkinson-Morgan and Miguel Lopez. I had the chance to discuss with them the game’s influences, challenges, and its growing community. (more…)

Draw My OC: Which Artists Do Tabletop Commissions?

Draw My OC: Which Artists Do Tabletop Commissions?

The best thing about tabletop RPGs becoming more popular and accessible than ever is that it’s far easier to find a group to play with. Artists are filling social media feeds with gorgeous art of their tabletop characters, and it’s natural to want some gorgeous art of your own—but how to find the right artist? What if your fave isn’t doing commissions? Is it rude to ask? What if you don’t know every artist out there and you can’t find exactly the right person to draw your invincible punch-mage?

Fear not, fellow players. We here at Sidequest have rounded up our favorite artists who specifically enjoy designing tabletop characters! They may not always be open for work, so please double-check their websites and social media before reaching out!
