GYGO: Spider-Man DLC, Soulcalibur 6 Character Creation, and The Witcher Returns (Sort Of)

Happy Wednesday! What have you been playing lately? I finished Spider-Man‘s main story and look forward to playing its first DLC chapter, The Heist (more on that below). I also finished Life is Strange 2 episode 1. If you’re looking for a heartbreaking story about two brothers that challenges racism and xenophobia, it’s a must-play. I’m only a few hours into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey but I hope Kassandra’s romance storylines begin sooner than later. Meanwhile I’m also playing Tomb Raider (2013) for the first time and I feel so inspired by Lara’s tenacity. Let us know on Twitter what you’re playing lately! Here’s some recent news we’ve been thinking about. (more…)

I’m a pretty big fan of the monster hunter known as Geralt of Rivia, in both the original book series by Andrzej Sapkowski and the subsequent Witcher video games from CD Projekt Red, and I am eagerly looking forward to the pending Netflix series. Unfortunately, the trade paperback The Witcher Volume 1: House of Glass—a collection of issues one through five of the Dark Horse Witcher comic miniseries—doesn’t quite reach my expectations. Get Your Game On: Guns, Geralt, and Gaming Regulations

A kindly friend loaned me her copy of Horizon Zero Dawn so that I can finally see what all the hype is about. I’m only just through the first section and am loving the diversity, the scenery, and the gameplay. OK, maybe I’m not loving the gameplay, but that’s just because it forced me to stealth right outta the gate, and if you know me, my stealthing usually involves a lot of flail, accidentally combat rolling when I should be stabbing, and very little stealth.

And yet, here I am at level eight and I’ve already earned my stealth kill trophy and have even been focusing on the stealth skill tree. Perhaps there’s still hope for my future career as a ninja. (more…)

Why I Game: The Witcher 3 Taught Me to Enjoy Video Games and My Free Time

I grew up video-game-adjacent. As a child and teen, I remember watching rather than actively participating, picking up games so infrequently that I considered myself less than a casual gamer. Puzzling through the HER Interactive Nancy Drew games with my mom and best friend is my most prominent gaming memory from childhood, mainly because I was a mystery-obsessed tween who read way too much Agatha Christie.

Get Your Game On: Gearing Up for Extra Life

I’ve been doing a lot of walking this week, starting with last Sunday’s Terry Fox Run. This week, I’m turning my thoughts to a different charity as I ramp up my Extra Life campaign. There are many reasons why gamers worldwide will be gathering together on November 4th to support the Children’s Miracle Network. My reason began over a decade ago when a Sick Kids Hospital radio-a-thon woke me up to the struggles of children and families at the hospital and the 24/7 fight to give those kids the lives they deserve, free of pain and illness. I made a commitment to Sick Kids Hospital on that day. Being a gamer and now a mother, participating in Extra Life’s game-a-thon is a no-brainer for me. Aside from the main event, the organization hosts several events, including this past week’s Extra Life Tabletop Appreciation Weekend.

What will I be playing on November 4th? That’s still up in the air, but maybe some of this week’s news items will serve as inspiration. (more…)
