I recently read this article via Longform (a website that curates the internet’s best longform articles, which you should be following) about this author’s obsession with his Christmas village. You know the the ceramic houses and knick-knacks that line the aisles during the holiday season? Most of them seem to hail back to a bygone era that is a strange combination of Victorian and 1950s post-war America via a Norman Rockwell painting. Yeah. That Christmas village found in hobby shops and craft stores all over America.
Last month for the lifestyle section, we explored the world of cosplay in its many manifestations. For the last month of summer, we are exploring organization and productivity in preparation for the approaching fall, new school year, and the slow fade of the lazy days of summer. Most of us work other jobs in addition to writing for and maintaining WWAC, so organization is crucial to our lives. Cathryn starts us off with her digital tools and methods for organization. This March, legendary interactive fiction and game creator Porpentine hosted a game jam challenging new and experienced authors to create a Twine story in 300 words or fewer. Twine is a game-authoring platform that helps creators make games without having to learn (too much) code. While it’s mostly used for deceptively simple text-based games, the platform also accommodates audio and visual elements, as well as scripting for the code-minded.
According to the Twiny Jam website, “low word count is a way to feel less intimidated about making something…+ focus on each individual detail and why it’s being included.” Twiny Jam is accepting submissions through April 9, 2015, and new authors are encouraged to add their entries to over 70 games that have already been submitted.
At some point about a year ago, a friend’s son introduced our eight-year-old to Minecraft on iPad. The game appeared harmless enough, and to be truthful, I had a parenting fail moment because I didn’t even research the game settings and environment before allowing her to dive in. In a very short time, my daughter has become a true fanatic. She owns t-shirts, action figures, stuffed characters, game manuals, fanfiction softcover books and ebooks, and the game itself on three different platforms. Do I seem like an indulgent mother? Maybe. But when her birthday or the holidays come around, she only asks for one thing—more Minecraft. It doesn’t even bother her that she can’t play a female character.
