November Roundtable: Let’s Talk About Travel in Games

Let’s talk about travel! Some of us will likely be traveling to visit family or friends, and others will be traveling through virtual spaces and the spaces of our imaginations. Travel is a bit contentious in games; in theory, they’re the perfect means to explore new worlds and do things you could or would never do in real life. In practice, travel can be a chore in bloated open worlds and same-y forests as you move between dungeons. I love how Mary Jane Watson and Miles Morales are integrated into the story. You even play as them for portions of the game! It’s been a joy to see Twitter light up with excitement over Spider-Man. Happy Wednesday! What are you playing lately? I finished Lifeline 2, a choice-driven text adventure for iOS and Android. You assist a magician searching for her missing brother and seeking to avenge her parents. I’ve also been playing GTA V story mode and enjoying new content that’s available after you buy certain properties. As Franklin, after you buy Downtown Cab Co., you pick up occasional fares who take you on brief, entertaining side trips. If you like underwater exploring, purchase the Sonar Collections Dock, and you’ll access a small submarine vessel that lets you explore hundreds of feet below the surface and see sharks and whales up close.
