Sidequest was provided with a copy of Forgotton Anne for PlayStation 4 in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Forgotton Anne (no, not a typo) has been much anticipated, included on both the EGX and Ars Technica top 10 lists of upcoming games. The game’s cel-shaded art style certainly helps it to stand out and, when combined with the fantastical narrative, suggests a strong influence from Studio Ghibli. This is not surprising, considering that animators Debbie Ekberg and Sebastian Ljungdahl both studied in Tokyo under Hiroyuki Morita, director of The Cat Returns. However, whilst other elements feel very Ghibli-esque, Forgotton Anne manages to carve out its own place through its unique characters and setting.
Angie writes reviews and stories whenever she is not investigating the latest dating sim or visual novel. She is a full-time Dragon Age obsessive but also plays board games and tabletop RPGs when she can. Besides games, Angie enjoys manga, broody tattooed elves, and TV cannibals.
Music Puzzle is a free-to-start mobile game whose genres are exactly what you’d expect: music and puzzles. The goal is to sort out a clip of music, putting each piece in its proper order and in the row for its proper instrument, like a jigsaw puzzle you listen to instead of see. I really liked the concept of listening and logicking through different instruments to put together a piece, so I thought I’d give it a try.
Longtime writer, temporary office minion, and nerd of all trades, tiakall is a fan of lengthy subordinate clauses and the Oxford comma. She enjoys plants, cats, puns of varying quality, and making cannibal jokes before it was cool.
Stephani is a former computer science nerd with a predilection for shoddy paranormal romance novels, cream-cheese-based frostings, and animals ten times her size. She’s inexplicably struck with a fatal case of fumble fingers every time she touches a controller—except when challenged to a match of her secret specialty: the 1995 hit SNES puzzle game Tetris Attack.
Let’s talk about your new favorite phone game. It’s called Chronolink DX, or as I like to call it, The Monster Mash. There is no monster mashing, but it feels appropriate to me.
Sidequest’s former managing editor Naseem Jamnia used to do sciencey things, but they now slam their keyboard and call it art. By night, they play a lot of video games. And regardless of the time, they spend way too much of it on Twitter, @jamsternazzy. Also, their debut novella, THE BRUISING OF QILWA, comes out in August 2022!
