This month, the month of love, we’re going to let you take a little peek behind the Sidequest curtain. For whatever reason, we rank quite highly for the search term “wario and waluigi,” which is not something we expected when we wrote “Wario and Waluigi: Who Are They, Anyway?” all those years ago. But because the Brothers Wario (if they are, in fact, brothers) keep driving traffic to our site, and because our other highest-ranked keyword is porn related, this month’s editorial meeting went A Certain Direction and Zora made us aware of this Wario and Waluigi body pillow (link NSFW). So what better way to honor the Brothers’ service to Sidequest than to make them this month’s icons to celebrate Valentine’s Day? (more…)

It’s summer here in the Northern Hemisphere! Time for lake swimming, marshmallow toasting, and the ever-important summer barbecue. Oh, and games. Don’t forget the games.
When we brainstormed this month’s topic, we came up with a few different ideas: astronomy, astrology, the dog days of summer, dogs… hot dogs… and barbecuing. Which leads to two important questions that will form the backbone—but not the entirety—of this month’s spicy, grilled discussion.

We all know about the Mario Brothers, those stewards of diligence in industries as diverse as plumbing, professional sports, and beating up other beloved Nintendo characters. But Wario and Waluigi—ah, now there’s a mystery. Who are these mysterious inversions of our well-known brothers Mario? (more…)

After a short comic surmising the Royal Crown’s effect on another character in the Mario franchise, a new star was born—Bowsette, the horned and busty female-bodied version of Bowser. Twitter, being full of thirsty humans, latched onto this idea like a Chain Chomp, and fanart, cosplays, and comics exploded forth. And a lot of it is very good, buuut, Rule 34 being what it is, searching the tags #Bowsette or #クッパ姫 (Koopa-hime, Princess Koopa) can be a game of NC-17 Russian Roulette. So for those who are thirsty but reading this at work, I have provided some of my favorite SFW takes on the lizard princess who gives no fucks.

As a primarily handheld gamer, it’s a bit weird to be in the console gamer circles. Handheld consoles are hardly ever discussed; they seem to fall into a cultural black hole. I regularly hear stories about how great things like Overwatch or Shadow of the Colossus or Super Mario 64 are, yet I never find the fans squealing about Radiant Historia, Bravely Default or, well, anything not named Pokemon. Retro gamers are all about the greats of the NES and SNES, but y’all, the Game Boy outsold both of them in a mere nine years (and with the Game Boy Color’s sales figures, outsold both of them combined.) The console generation gap is even weirder to me, because within my generation, everyone knew the Game Boy. Everyone wanted one or had one. Nowadays? We got the NES classic and SNES classic, but the best the Game Boy has gotten is a few rereleases on the 3DS Virtual Console. Where is the justice in this? For y’all that didn’t get the chance to experience it firsthand, sit down and let me tell you what you’ve missed.
