GYGO: Mergers, Not-Mergers, and Gamescom 2022

Hello, and welcome to Get Your Game On! My name is December and I have not played anything in two months! I am dying on the inside! But on the bright side, Gamescom was this week and it’s given me enough life to at least make it to the release of Harvestella, Square Enix’s Rune Factory ripoff (I say with all the love in my heart). More on Gamescom after we talk about some other big (probably bad) news. (more…)

GYGO: What a Week, Huh

Hello and welcome to Get Your Game On. I’m Maddi, your host for this week, and I’m tired. Here in the United States, we’ve been experiencing a particularly horrifying onslaught of events over the last several months, from the likely end of Roe v. Wade to recent mass shootings in Buffalo, Laguna Woods, and Uvalde. If you have cash to spare, GoFundMe has created a central hub of verified fundraisers raising money in support of families who lost loved ones in the shooting at Ross Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. GYGO: IGDA Allegedly Mishandles Conduct Complaints

Content note: mentions of harassment and abuse, toxic workplace environments, queerphobia and transphobia.

Welcome back to Get Your Game On! My name is Zainabb and it’s been A Week. While I’m dealing with grief, mega-fatigue, and depression, this week’s gaming news almost feels lighthearted even though we’re still dealing with harassment and abuse in the industry, fuckin’ NFTs, and a reminder that our global queer fam continues to fight against oppression!

Please do at least one nice thing for yourself today and get some fresh air, even if it’s just by opening a window for five minutes. (more…)

GYGO: Goodbye Stadia, Hello Stream

Hello and welcome to Get Your Game On! I’m Maddi and I sure do have a regrettable (read: non-zero) amount of NFT news for you this week, but, dare I say, it is not all bad. Before we get to that, though, tell me: have you been playing anything good lately? Because I have been playing a lot of mobile games, including My Horse Prince, and while it is hilarious, I would not go so far as to call it good. Please save me from myself, and feel free to send us your recommendations on Twitter, or, if you’re a member of our Patreon at the Sega Genesis tier or higher, in our Discord! Okay, now it’s time for the news. (more…)

Exercising Mediocrity: Playing Skate 3 as Myself

Exercising Mediocrity: Playing Skate 3 as Myself

I can kickflip in real life. I can also ollie down a five-stair. What I can’t do is kickflip down a five-stair! Every time I’ve given it a go, it has always ended with some part of my body bloodied and/or scraped after an all-too-personal meeting with the pavement. Falling is a big part of skateboarding, and learning how to fall is one of the most important aspects of ensuring that your time with skateboarding is longer rather than shorter. Skateboarding is an exercise in pushing against gravity with concrete and metal. The concrete and metal always win, but sometimes a skater can work with them to cheat gravity and land a trick—an endeavor that can often feel like a war of attrition; small steps towards progress that are punctuated by often hard slams. Through accepting that one’s body can only take so much punishment and the humbling fact that most of us will never go pro, we must accept our boundaries. (more…)
