GYGO Variety Hour: Strikes, Unions, and Layoffs, Oh My!

GYGO Variety Hour: Strikes, Unions, and Layoffs, Oh My!

Welcome back to Get Your Game On Variety Hour! It’s been a tough few months to focus on frivolity, so I’ve got a pretty labor-focused grab-bag for you today between the New York Times Tech Guild strike, a tabletop shop worker’s union, and Don’t Nod’s Parisian outlet pushing layoffs. Read on for updates, and when you’re done, try to grab some sunlight while it’s still available (unless you’re in the southern hemisphere, in which case I hope you can sense my seething jealousy).

October Roundtable: Intentional Horror Games

October Roundtable: Intentional Horror Games

You know that bit at the end of The Muppet Christmas Carol where Gonzo (as Charles Dickens) and Rizzo (as Rizzo) excuse themselves because the movie has gotten too scary? That’s me with this roundtable.

This month, we’re talking about intentionality in horror games. But Melissa, I hear you say, surely all horror games are intentional about the horror they contain? Not necessarily! Games, like any other horror media, can be packed full of bad-faith jump scares and scares for scares sake. We’re not talking about that. We’re talking about the oopy-goopy, freaky-deaky stuff that’s made to creep you out down to your bones, not just by making a loud sound at an opportune time, but by rattling you to your core.

All right, horror enthusiasts—I’ll see you at the finale. (more…)

GYGO Variety Hour: Some People Have Too Much Money

Welcome back to Get Your Game On Variety Hour! We’re speedrunning this month’s, because I quite frankly have terrible time management skills and started Dragon Age 2 instead of, uh, this piece.

Israel’s war on Gaza has now expanded to include an active and sustained assault on Lebanon. As we do every week, we urge you to stay abreast of the conflict in whatever way you find sustainable—I personally pay attention to chatter online as well as having Al Jazeera and the Associated Press’s apps send push notifications to my phone—and do what you can to help. Please consider donating to Medical Aid for Palestinians or purchasing eSims to help folks stay connected. I also find Zainabb Hull’s Crips for Palestine newsletter to be a great way to both stay up to date and take small, frequent actions. (more…)

September Roundtable: Festivals

September Roundtable: Festivals

Who doesn’t love a festival? (Festival haters need not comment.) While you’d be hard-pressed to find me at a real-life festival, due in no small part to my small town not having many of them, I love indulging in a little gaming frivolity. Maybe it’s all those bonus opportunities in The Sims or seeing familiar places in World of Warcraft decked out for the Darkmoon Faire, but there’s something special about an in-game festival. Why? Let’s find out. (more…)

GYGO Variety Hour: This One’s a Weird One

Welcome back to Get Your Game On Variety Hour! We’re somehow light on Variety Hour news this month (or I’ve just been really cozily curled up under my rock recently), so the roundup is going to be… especially eclectic today, let’s say. Buckle in for some Internet Archive updates, some TTRPG rounding-up, and finally, some links to more traditional new-release and current-event-type news, I suppose.
