In 2019, I was scrolling through Apple’s App Store in search of an interactive story mobile game similar to Pixelberry’s Choices. I had wanted to play Choices since its conception, when I used to watch playthroughs of some of the stories on YouTube. However, my problem is that I’ve always found the diamond choices to be extremely expensive. I’m not interested in having to watch numerous ads and then wait for hours to mine for free diamonds, so I feel that I can’t fully enjoy the app’s stories. There have also been complaints from fans about how the quality of the app’s story outputs has been dwindling. In fact, I had tried playing another mobile game, Chapters: Interactive Stories, but found the stories badly written. (more…)

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve been in a serious “I only want to play video games and do literally nothing else” mood since quarantine started. Of course, we on the Sidequest team often want to play lots of games, so I turned to my fellow writers to ask whether there were any free or cheap quarantine games they recommend for this weird time of ours. We gathered our suggestions into categories based on quarantine moods, so hopefully one of these hits your quarantine games itch. Sidequest’s former managing editor Naseem Jamnia used to do sciencey things, but they now slam their keyboard and call it art. By night, they play a lot of video games. The earliest memory of my first game is sitting on the cold, hard, ceramic floor as a child, watching my older sister play our PlayStation 1. I remember a farmer running from his farm to pick up some herbs and bamboo shoots from the deep green ground by the blue waterfall near the entrance to the Spring Mine. There were two pretty girls walking around—one had bubbly pink hair, and one had her orange hair braided. My eyes were glued to the TV screen. (more…)
