Sidequest complete: after over a year of playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I finally found every Korok in the game.
I started playing Breath of the Wild in the summer of 2017, just a few months after it was released, and right around the one-year anniversary of graduating from my master’s program. Since graduating, I had only been able to find part-time and temporary work at a couple jobs (one of which was in my field, at least!). I was poor financially but rich in free time… especially during the day, when my roommate went to her full-time job and left her Nintendo Switch unattended! (Don’t worry, my roommate was cool with me making my own account on her Switch and playing games when she wasn’t around). (more…)

The first time I heard No Man’s Sky referred to as a “podcast game,” I felt my entire life change. I’m a notorious multitasker, and the idea that I could both play something and catch up on one of the numerous podcasts I’m behind on at the same time was revelatory.
Now, to be fair, I’ve never actually sat down to play No Man’s Sky while listening to podcasts. But as I was thinking about this, and all the other things I do while playing games, I realized that there’s a not insignificant part of my gaming history intertwined with the music I was listening to while playing. So, as always, I asked the Sidequest crew what they thought! (more…)

It’s no surprise that a site full of writers has a fair number of folks participating in National Novel Writing Month, but that got us—more specifically, it got Tia Kalla and Zainabb Hull—thinking about gamification and setting our own challenges.
Gaming is comprised of challenges big and small, from individual enemy encounters to executing the perfect raid in an MMORPG to finally getting your D&D group together. But what about the challenges we make for ourselves? Can we gamify gaming itself?
Turns out, we can. (more…)

The best thing about tabletop RPGs becoming more popular and accessible than ever is that it’s far easier to find a group to play with. Artists are filling social media feeds with gorgeous art of their tabletop characters, and it’s natural to want some gorgeous art of your own—but how to find the right artist? What if your fave isn’t doing commissions? Is it rude to ask? What if you don’t know every artist out there and you can’t find exactly the right person to draw your invincible punch-mage?
Fear not, fellow players. We here at Sidequest have rounded up our favorite artists who specifically enjoy designing tabletop characters! They may not always be open for work, so please double-check their websites and social media before reaching out!
