I was told about 1998’s Grim Fandango at the worst possible time: long after I owned any machine that could run it, and long before June 2014, when the remastered version was announced at E3. Now, via an announcement from GOG.com, I know exactly when I can finally and for the first time be Manny Calavera, travel agent for the Land of the Dead: January 27th, 2015!

According to lead developer Tim Schafer’s video announcementGrim Fandango Remastered will feature

  • updated graphics (which were apparently super-innovative in the original),
  • a re-recorded score (which was apparently wonderful and integrated South American folk music with a ton of other styles), and
  • different control schemes (because some of us never played games with tank controls and find them difficult and backdated now!)

It has been an actual decade since I first heard about Grim Fandango, and I can’t wait to see if its noir humor, charming story, and adventure-game puzzles will hold up sixteen years after its initial release.

Grim Fandango Remastered is available for pre-order on GOG.com and the Playstation Network for $14.99.
